Algonquin College Spring Convocation
[June 10, 2008]
Approximately 2,000 of the 5,693-strong Algonquin College spring graduating class will attend Convocation ceremonies at Scotiabank Place on Thursday, June 12, and Friday, June 13. Algonquin College President Robert Gillett will preside over the presentation of degrees, diplomas and certificates at four separate ceremonies. In recognition of lifetime achievement and service to the Ottawa Community, Algonquin will be bestowing one of the College's first two Honorary Diplomas on Jacquelin Holzman, former Mayor of the City of Ottawa and community activist. Ms. Holzman will receive her Diploma on Thursday, June 12, at 10:00 a.m. Sean Conway received his Honorary Diploma during the Pembroke Campus Convocation on Saturday, May 31.
Children’s Aid Society Establishes $250,000 in Endowed Bursaries at Algonquin College

Champions For Children Foundation, the M.A. Teall Foundation, and the Ontario Trust for Student Support will donate $250,000 to the Algonquin College Foundation to establish the first-ever endowment bursaries for Ottawa Children’s Aid Society youth attending Algonquin College. A cheque presentation will take place on Friday, June 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Algonquin College, on the Woodroffe Campus, to recognize this generous donation. The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa is committed to protecting the children and youth of our community from all forms of abuse and neglect. The Society works to keep them safe and secure, both within their families and the communities in which they live.
Algonquin College Heritage Institute Spring Convocation

One hundred and twenty-five students from Algonquin College Heritage Institute will graduate during the Spring Convocation ceremony taking place at St. John Catholic High School on Thursday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m., in Perth, Ontario. Algonquin College Hosts Sixth-Annual ACESS National Conference

Algonquin College and Carleton University will host the Make the CUT (College University Transition) program on Wednesday, May 7, at Algonquin College. This unique initiative is designed for Grade 12 students with learning disabilities or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder who are planning to attend college or university in 2008-2009. It is a joint initiative of Algonquin College's Centre for Students with Disabilities and Carleton University's Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities. This one-day event will focus on preparation and self advocacy, educational assistive technology, and learning strategies, with workshops highlighting the first-year experience.

Algonquin College will host the Knorr/Canadian Culinary Federation (CCFCC) Ontario Junior Culinary Challenge, on Saturday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Restaurant International, on the College’s Woodroffe Campus. Four of Algonquin’s Culinary Management and Culinary Skills - Chef Training Program students will be competing in a field of 10 to be named best junior cook in Ontario and win a chance to represent the province in the National Junior Culinary Challenge to be held on Friday, April 25, in Montreal, Quebec. The Knorr/CCFCC Ontario Junior Culinary Challenge is based on points earned for creating appetizers, entrées and desserts. Each competitor will be judged by CCFCC - approved experienced chefs on cooking techniques and skills, presentation, taste, work plan and menu, organizational skills, product utilization, and safety and sanitation.

Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealers are addressing the current skilled-trades
shortage in the automotive industry with a donation to the Algonquin College
Foundation and the College’s Transportation Technology Centre. The $50,000
donation from Capital Dodge Chrysler Jeep, CarCanada Chrysler Dodge Jeep and
Southbank Dodge Chrysler Jeep will go towards the Algonquin College Foundation’s
Transportation Technology Campaign.

This event, sponsored by the College’s Alumni Association and Student Services Department, is an opportunity for College students and alumni to network with more than 60 area employers, submit résumés and obtain up-to-date information on the current job market.
Algonquin College hosts the 13th Annual Hot Food Competition
[February 16, 2008]
Algonquin College will host the 13th Annual Hot Food Competition, on Saturday, February 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Restaurant International, on the College’s Woodroffe Campus. Twenty-four of Algonquin’s Culinary Management and Culinary Skills - Chef Training Program students will be competing to win a chance to represent the College at the Skills Canada - Ontario Competition taking place during the first week of May, in Kitchener, Ontario. The Hot Food Competition is based on points earned for creating individual dishes. Each student will create soups, appetizers, entrees and deserts that will be served in the College’s Restaurant International and evaluated by chefs from the Ottawa Chapter of Toques Blanches, an international hospitality industry association.

Workforce Needs of Eastern Ontario at Breakfast Forum

Algonquin College is hosting a breakfast meeting entitled Addressing the Workforce
Needs of Eastern Ontario on Wednesday, February 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., on

in the Electrical Delivery Sector

Robert Gillett, President of Algonquin College, will welcome Paul St. Denis,
Hydro One Superintendant, to tour the College’s Electrical Engineering
Technician and Technology programs’ facilities as part of a partnership that will
address the skilled trades shortage in this industry. Algonquin and Hydro One
recently signed an agreement that is designed to attract students into the
electrical transmission and distribution utility sector.

Speaker Series lecture titled Thinking Outside the Box about Homes and Communities on

feature Avi Friedman, Architect and Director, Affordable Homes Program, School of
Architecture, McGill University. During his visit to the College, Avi will deliver a lecture
focused on building affordable housing and sustainable communities, followed by a
question and answer session.

Algonquin College Bunkhouse Donation to Camp Smitty

Algonquin College will donate two student-made
bunkhouses to Camp Smitty on
Tuesday, November 27. Students in the Building Construction Technician Program built
two completely finished 14' x 28' x 12’ bunkhouses that will increase the housing
capacity on the Camp Smitty grounds.
Algonquin First Canadian College to Sign International Energy Conservation Agreement

Algonquin College will receive recognition for its commitment to energy conservation
during the College’s “Energy Awareness Day” on Friday, November 23. Peter Love,
Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation Officer, will present Robert Gillett, President of
Algonquin College, with an Ontario Power Authority Certificate of Recognition for the
College’s dedication to the reduction of energy consumption, promotion of energy
awareness amongst the student body and the integration of energy conservation
within the College’s larger sustainability planning.
Algonquin College Media Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Algonquin College’s School of Media and Design has established a hall of fame to
honour industry leaders in several media and media-related
fields. Inductees will be
honoured at the Media Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Wednesday,

inductees are leaders in the media industry and have been
selected based on individual excellence, innovation, and contributions to their

Algonquin’s Heritage Institute Launches eQuality Home Project

The students and staff in the Algonquin College Heritage Institute’s Construction CarpentryAdvanced

in 2008, it will be a fully accessible home that has minimal impact on the environment and is
affordable to build. Algonquin’s eQuality Home project is unique to Canadian colleges and will

Computer Programming Olympics for High School Students

The Computer Studies Department in Algonquin College's School of Advanced
Technology is hosting its fourth Computer Programming Olympics. This year’s contest
theme is CSI Algonquin: Case of the Phantom. The contest is open to Ottawaarea
high
school students who register and qualify within a fourweek
preliminary phase that
ended on April 27, solving a series of computer problems in an attempt to locate “The
Phantom” by decoding sound files with cryptic clues. Qualifying teams are invited for a
final day event at Algonquin College on Saturday, May 12, where students will compete
for valuable prizes and medals with enhanced programming problems. The winning
teams will receive their awards at a closing ceremony presentation.

Music Industry Leaders Visit Algonquin College

Students in the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Management Program at Algonquin College are ‘rocking’ through their curriculum while learning marketing strategies through a unique collaboration with major and independent record labels. The program will feature guest visits from music industry leaders such as Mary Jelley, from Warner Music Canada, and Ricky Paquette, sixteen-year-old Gatineau-based blues guitarist and 2006 winner of the LYS Blues Best New Artist Award, on Thursday, January 18.

GIS Day Open House and GeoCache Challenge

As part of "Geography Awareness Week" Algonquin College's Geographic
Information Systems program is hosting a GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
Day Open House and GeoCache Challenge on Wednesday, November 15, from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Professors, students and graduates of the College’s GIS
program, as well as GIS industry experts, will be on hand to answer questions
while attendees are invited to tour the GIS lab and see demonstrations of
powerful GIS tools.
Algonquin College Celebrates Outstanding United Way Campaign

Algonquin Hosts Musem Volunteer Event

Volunteers within the museum community are always in high demand. With this
in mind, Algonquin College’s Applied Museum Studies program is bringing
together 21 regional museums, several professional museum organizations and
128 museum studies students for an evening of insight, networking and
volunteer opportunities. The event, entitled Opportunities 06/07 – Regional
Museum Volunteerism, provides regional cultural institutions an occasion to
present volunteer projects and opportunities to students and potential
volunteers in attendance.
Algonquin College Fall Convocation

Close to 400 graduates will be attending Algonquin College’s Fall
Convocation to be held at the National Arts Centre on Monday, October 23,

Speaker at the College’s Fall Convocation. Mr. Therien is a 1998 graduate
of Algonquin College’s Print Journalism program and has won numerous
awards for special editorial projects and newspaper design.

Local Hyundai Dealers Donate $50,000 to the Algonquin College Foundation
[June 10, 2006]
Two Ottawa-area Hyundai dealers are helping to address the current skilled-trades shortage in the automotive industry through a donation to the Algonquin College Foundation’s Transportation Technology Centre Campaign. Donations from West Ottawa Hyundai and Pathway Hyundai, totaling $50,000, will go towards the College’s $6.8 million state-of-the-art transportation facility built for students studying in the Motive Power Technician program and the automotive apprenticeship programs.

The forum will be moderated by Russell Mills, Algonquin College’s Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design, and will feature opening and closing remarks from all candidates as well as a student panel and question period.
